 Background

Typer Shark was originally called Word Shark while in development. We later realized there was another title with the same name, so we changed it. At this time in the company's history, we built our web games first and they were in Java, not ActiveX or Flash. This was a bit of a mess, as with the Java games, we would put things into as few classes as possible to cut down on precious download time. Going to C++ tended to produce some ugly looking code. This game was also built during our period of assuming that a user would never want the game to end and would want to play it forever. Hence, you have the Bermuda Triangle part of the game, where it goes on forever and algorithmically gets harder. It would seem, however, that users do like to have a sense of achievement and completion, so perhaps a different end-game outcome would have been better. We had several different difficulty modes, ranging from people who type around 20 WPM to the more X-TREME typers who do about 100+. Trying to balance for the 20 WPM mode was pretty interesting. I would sit and very slowly hunt and peck, and randomly press incorrect letters on the keyboard.

I still like this game, despite some of its design flaws. The boss battles are actually pretty fun, and the abyss mode, which is sort of like a survival mode in other games, is my favorite method of play.
